Getting kids in the habit of brushing their teeth may seem like a large and sometimes impossible task. The good news is that kids like to have fun and there are ways to turn an important habit into an entertaining event! We have come up with some tips on how to improve your child’s smile, while keeping them smiling, through co-brushing methods.

Let Them Brush Your Teeth
If your child is new to brushing or is struggling with dental hygiene, a fun way to ensure that they are brushing correctly is to let them practice on you! Warning: This may get messy…and you might have a little fun too! By putting your child in the driver’s seat, you will give them a chance to learn the technical way to brush, as well as the responsibility of doing the job well. Make them feel like a “big” kid.

Dance to Music While Brushing
An impromptu dance session is always a good idea! Why not try brushing while you dance? Select a two-minute song and dance and brush until it’s over. That way, you know your child has brushed long enough.

Let Them Pick Out Their Own Toothbrush and Toothpaste
“Big” kids get to pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. When your child sees their favorite character waiting for them in the morning and at night, there is a better chance they will use their tooth products. Go a step further and make up a story to go with the products! For instance, if your child loves Ninja Turtles, purchase the green ooze toothpaste. Tell them they need to brush their teeth with “mutagen ooze” to grow strong like the turtles! If your child likes fairies or princesses, purchase a Barbie-themed toothpaste to make their teeth sparkle like diamonds! Have fun and get creative with your child’s interests; the pay-off is priceless!

No matter what method you choose or create, make sure you are using fun rather than stress to ensure your child’s dental health. It is suggested that you monitor your child’s brushing and flossing methods until the age of eight. Remember: Brush every day, twice a day, and floss once a week. If you get stuck or can’t think of anything to do, always look to your child; they are coming up with new ways to have fun every day!
